Come for the Lighthouse, stay for the real estate….That could well be said of Montauk, Long Island, until recently the poor relation to the South Fork’s Hamptons. Beyond toney East Hampton, the easternmost Hampton town, lies down-to-earth Montauk, literally “The End”. Next stop, Europe! The Montauk lighthouse has been drawing daytrippers since the 1950s. Soon other tourist attractions lined the route of the pilgrimage. These include a campground and the Lobster Roll restaurant, whose unpretentious exterior belies its trendy clientele. Trailrides, too are possible at the Deep Hollow Ranch. Gosman’s Dock has long been a destination for fresh seafood lovers; its décor like its food, is simple.
The town of Montauk has become more tourist conscious in recent years as families, couples and corporate meetings are held at the world-famous Gurney’s Inn. McMansion houses have sprung up as well….but reasonable coops can be had at the Montauk Manor, a Tudor monolith from the1920s that finally found its future as reasonably-priced housing in the 1990s.
Montauk is a family area. Real estate sales include vacation and year ’round housing. There are few, if any, group houses here for young
Manhattan singles. And prices for starter and downsizer homes are considerably more reasonable here, than a few miles west in the Hamptons.
